About the Compendium

This compendium is an independent academic reference. It exists to help a reader understand a settled body of mathematical statistics, and for no other purpose whatsoever.

Who it is for

The intended reader is a student, a teacher or a careful amateur who wants the ideas of mathematical statistics and stochastic series explained in plain language without a course attached. The papers assume no prior acquaintance with the material, but they do assume willingness to read a paragraph twice. No paper addresses any commercial question, and no paper offers guidance of any kind beyond the mathematics itself.

How the papers are written

Each paper states an idea in words, then draws it, then gives the symbols. The sequence is deliberate. A reader who meets only symbols learns to manipulate them without knowing what they say; a reader who meets the words and the picture first has somewhere to put the symbols when they arrive. Where a choice of notation could be made several ways, the compendium states its choice in the reference step and holds to it throughout.

Three editorial promises

What the compendium is not

The compendium is not a textbook, not a course, and not a source of advice. It does not gather data, it does not provide any service, and it does not speak for any institution. It is a private reference maintained by a small desk, and its only product is the writing you are reading. Nothing on these pages should be taken as a recommendation about any real situation.

Corrections welcome

A reference is only as good as its errors are caught. The desk welcomes corrections from readers, whether they concern a rounding, a symbol or a sentence that could be made clearer. Corrections are read by a person, and a correction that improves the writing is a contribution to every later reader.

How the material is maintained

The compendium is reviewed periodically and kept in the shape it was first written. New papers are admitted only when they fill a genuine gap in the rail; the rail itself is not rearranged lightly, because a reader who has learned its sequence should not find it changed without cause. Where a page is revised, the revision aims at clarity rather than novelty, and the sense of the page is preserved.

Independence and its limits

The desk that maintains the compendium is independent of any institution, and the writing reflects the desk's own editorial judgement alone. That independence also sets a limit. The compendium claims no authority beyond careful reading, and a reader who needs an authoritative treatment of a specialised question should turn to the formal literature. What the compendium offers is a clear path in, honestly marked, and nothing more.

How to read the rail as an introduction

A reader meeting the compendium for the first time may use the rail itself as a short introduction. The five step names, read from left to right, tell the story in miniature: a single distribution, then two quantities and their matrix, then a record through time, then frequency and simple recipes, and finally the reference that keeps the notation steady. Following only the first paper of each step gives a reader a sketch of the whole without the labour of every page.

Readers who intend a full pass should then return to the first step and read it in sequence, because the later pages lean on the earlier notation more than their titles suggest. The rail never hides a paper and never reorders one; it is meant to be walked, and walking it once in sequence is the surest way to arrive at the end with the thread still in hand.
